Dr Peirce has just returned from the 45th annual symposium of the American Society of Oculoplastic, reconstructive and oculofacial surgeons in Chicago USA.
While surgery remains the primary form of long lasting rejuvenation of the face and eyelids, there is a move in the USA by patients towards non-surgical rejuvenation techniques such as Botox, Fillers and Laser resurfacing. The advantages of these non- surgical techniques is rapid recovery and fast results. The disadvantages being a short term of action from 3 to 18 months. With surgery the recovery is slower but the effect is much longer lasting.
As far as surgery was concerned the benefits of not removing fat in Blepharoplasty surgery was again emphasised. Dr Peirce has been using this technique of repositioning rather than removing fat for the past 3 years. Removing the fat can cause a sunken “cadaveric” look, especially as the patient ages while repositioning the fat maintains volume and avoids this.
